Top 10 morris family songs of "08"

I thought I'd start blogging months ago, but I now know that once I say something out loud, it then takes...hmmm say 1-3 months to initiate it. so lets start with something simple.  Music. Simple because, its what I know and love. The Morris kids are deprived of television. Not because i think t.v. is evil. I just know its another bill that i might potentially forget to pay.  So naturally we listen to a lot of music and we do watch movies. But really music has always had a strong presence in my family.  So trying to pick the top 10 of "08" sounded like a good way to get this bloggin'  ball 'o' fun rolling. Mind you, some of this Music is not recorded in "08". It is just what my familia has either been subjected to(depends on the kid), or listened to willfully in 2008. either way- it's all good!

This is not in any order. 1 is no the least of my favorites nor best.

1. Jolie Holland-Sweet Lovin Man.

I must say That Jolie is truly amazing. Totally have a lady crush. Her lyrics are a loving bullet, straight to the heart. I get this woman.
(This is one of my picks)

2.Lady Sovereign-Love me or Hate me(clean version)

Totally Khia and Sadie. You know, the preteen angst, and attitude. Like i said we have the clean version, still because of her accent the "thank you" sound like she is saying something else. It is "thank you" though in the clean version. I know..we played this over and over and debated many times.
(Khia and Sadie pick)

3.Trampled by Turtles- Jars at Home.

Canning. This song makes me think of being self-sufficient, and being a canner of things!  By far one of my faves.
(Nancy,Khia,Sadie,Ani, and Jude approved)

4.Beirut-Elephant Guns. Runner up-Nantes

What can I say, I truly believe I am part Gypsy at times. This beautiful music making man and band verifies this.  I think this is where Jude gets his obsession with wanting to learn accordian.
A kid has to have a dream i guess.
(Jude and Myself love every song on every album)

5. William Fitzsimmon-I don't feel it anymore
Good song to cry your friggin eyeballs out to. A girl needs to get her cry on every once in awhile.

6. Carolina Smith-Where Has Sally gone?

Sadie and i were listening to public radio one night. This woman was a guest on it. Sadie said "that's a really nice song" .  So when we arrived back home we bought it on itunes. I now am sick of this song. But, it is part of my families"08" music experience. And the fact that Sadie opened up to me on something will keep this song near and dear.
(Sadie and Ani approved)

7.Jose Gonzales-Hand on your Heart.

I guess I am a sucker for men who have soulful intent and expose hearts weaknesses(or strengths). At any rate his guitar playing is nice.

8.Blitzen Trapper-Furr

Alason..thank you for introducing me to them. Love their metaphors, Love the ambiance. ect ect ect. I feel like im in the woods when i listen to this. Why they spelled fur wrong is still a mystery to me. if anyone knows this fill me in on this.
(whole family loves it)

9.Dark,Dark,Dark-Trouble no more.

I was in cities one weekend. One of the weekends without the kids. I remember feeing a little lost. Long story short... I ended up at treehouse records, because an old friend of a friends' band was playing there. The record shop is small and was full of sweaty stinky hippy heads/indie gypsy folk. Which in 90 degree weather. in a little non-air conditioned record store. Smells like patchouli, dust, and adventure.  I am accustomed to this smell, it's just been 20 years. Anyhow they were playing this song that(again) made me tear up. As I was tearing. A nice gypsy head looked at me and nodded with a sign of approval(or mabey he was stoned). I really have no clue.
It is moments like these I cherish.
Most of the music has a indie gypsy overtone..banjo accordian and cello.
They are, as their name implies, dark, dark, dark.
Also my friend Andy is making the lead guys(Marshall) new banjo. Andy is the first luthier I have ever met.
I believe this is noteworthy. Since I had no idea what a luthier was.

(my kids are burnt out on this, i am not)

10. Iron and Wine-Naked as we came.
I must just like sappy songs, Because this is another. I like pretty guitar pickin music. reminds me of Nick Drake a littleThat whispery hush hush lovey dovey sound.  but looks like a skinny young handsome Grizzly Adams.
(whole family likes this)

Thats it! 2008!
